WECHAT MINI PROGRAMS AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT? | Shanghai Silk Road

WeChat (or Weixin in Chinese) belongs to Chinese tech giant Tencent Holdings –one of the most valuable companies in the world, worth over $500 billion, is the dominant Chinese social media application, with 1.1B monthly active users, that is as of December 2020. WeChat is currently offered in 20 languages. In China, and increasingly in most of the South East Asia, and many other countries of Africa and Asia, WeChat is seen as the source of information, entertainment, a platform to purchase goods, and of course, the main mobile platform for personal and professional communication.

WeChat Pay

WeChat Pay is one of the main payment gateways in China with 39.5% China's mobile payment marketshare, where the biggest mobile payment gateway Alipay has 54.5% China's mobile payment marketshare. You can link your cards to WeChat Pay and forget about cash payments in China, because literally everyone uses either WeChat Pay or Alipay, or some third party application that connects all the major payment gateways. WeChat Pay supports 13 foreign currencies.

What is a WeChat mini program?

In January 2017, WeChat launched mini programs that link to business accounts and enable certain features like additional content, loyalty programs and transactions. Mini Programs are “mini-applications” built within the WeChat platform.

Why is it important?

Well, because there are 1.1 billion monthly active users on WeChat and all those users actively purchase goods and products on WeChat. Last year statistics (January 2019) shows that WeChat users bought 1.1 billion RMB worth of products only through WeChat mini programs. WeChat and other Tencent social media revenue for 2019 was 82.3 billion RMB, and Tencent revenue for 2019 was 377.3 billion RMB.

These are extremely promising numbers for any business that is interested in entering the Chinese Market with their products and services.
