================================
Chromosomes are thread-like structures made of DNA and proteins called histones. They organize, protect, and compact genetic material to fit within the cell nucleus. A typical duplicated chromosome consists of two sister chromatids joined at the centromere, featuring a short arm (p arm) and a long arm (q arm).

Key Molecular Components
DNA: A double-helix molecule that contains the genetic code.

Histones: Specialized proteins that act as spools around which DNA wraps.

Nucleosomes: The fundamental unit of chromatin. It consists of a segment of DNA wrapped twice around a core of eight histone proteins.

Chromatin: The uncondensed, uncoiled state of DNA and proteins, which condenses into a visible chromosome during cell division.

Core Anatomical Features of a Chromosome

Centromere: The constricted central region that divides the chromosome into arms. It is essential for cell division, acting as the attachment point for spindle fibers that separate chromosomes.
Sister Chromatids: Identical halves of a replicated chromosome formed before a cell divides.

Telomeres: Protective caps at the very ends of the chromosome. They prevent the DNA strands from fraying or degrading and are critical in aging and cell stability.
Arms (P and Q): The sections separated by the centromere. The short arm is called the p arm, and the long arm is called the q arm.

Human Organization

Humans typically have 46 chromosomes organized into 23 pairs (22 pairs of autosomes and 1 pair of sex chromosomes determining biological sex).
