The eleventh and final season of The Walking Dead, an American post-apocalyptic horror television series on AMC is set to premiere on August 22, 2021, and will consist of 24 episodes. Developed for television by Frank Darabont, the series is based on the eponymous series of comic books by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. The executive producers are Kirkman, David Alpert, Scott M. Gimple, Angela Kang, Greg Nicotero, Joseph Incaprera, Denise Huth, and Gale Anne Hurd, with Kang as showrunner for her third and final season.

This season will adapt material from issues #175–193 of the comic book series and focuses on the group's encounter with the Commonwealth, a large network of communities that has advanced equipment and almost fifty thousand survivors living in their different settlements.

Despite an overall decrease in the ratings, showrunner Angela Kang confirmed at New York Comic Con on October 5, 2019 that The Walking Dead has been renewed for another season, throwing us back into the zombie apocalypse for an 11th year.

"The Walking Dead burst out of the gate ten years ago as a genre show that had all the character depth of a top-tier prestige drama," said Sarah Barnett, former president of AMC networks entertainment group and AMC studios.

"And now 10 years later – led by the brilliant Angela Kang and fuelled by one of the most consistently talented casts in television – this phenomenon is flourishing creatively, with critics and audiences embracing its reset."

"We have a lot of thrilling story left to tell on TWD, and then, this end will be a beginning of more Walking Dead – brand new stories and characters, familiar faces and places, new voices, and new mythologies. This will be a grand finale that will lead to new premieres. Evolution is upon us. The Walking Dead lives."

So it's not all doom and gloom, especially as a Daryl and Carol spin-off has been confirmed, with showrunner Angela Kang once again taking charge.

The premiere is planned for 2023.

"I look forward to digging in with our brilliant writers, producers, directors, cast, and crew to bring this epic final chapter of Robert Kirkman's story to life for our fans over the next two years," said Kang.

"The Walking Dead flagship series has been my creative home for a decade and so it's bittersweet to bring it to an end, but I could not be more excited to be working with Scott Gimple and AMC to develop a new series for Daryl and Carol.
