Report - The U.S. Navy Needs MQ-9 Reaper Drones

The problem is that while the Navy is developing long-range weapons, such as hypersonic boost-glide weapons and the Long Range Anti-Ship Missile or LRASM, it doesn’t have long-range drones to provide targeting information to aim those missiles, according to the report, titled “If You Can’t See ‘Em, You Can’t Shoot ‘Em.”

“Without an actual ISRT or intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and targeting complex to identify targets and feed precise data back to the fleet, American long-range missiles will not improve the strategic balance in the Western Pacific,” the report warns. “The US currently lacks intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance platforms, manned or unmanned, that can remain on station for long enough, cover enough ground, and feedback enough information to an American fleet to allow US commanders to shape the combat environment.
