Chinampas - Creating a multifunctional environmentally integrated growing system

In this video, we take a look at a Chinampa system. I began working on this system several years ago and can work on it during droughts. I returned to work the chinampas this week. The Aztecs used chinampa growing systems to meet the needs of a very large population without harming the environment. Rich soil sediment is dredged from wetlands creating long strips of rich fertile soil to grow crops. In the process, canals are created between the growing beds. These growing systems create microclimates that are less susceptibility to drought, frosts, and severe weather events. They also create bioremediation systems removing waste from the water, decrease the need for frequent watering, create arable soil from sediment, sequester carbon through photosynthesis, and reestablish water, nitrogen, and carbon cycles while creating habitats for aquatic and wetland beneficial species.
