Will Russia Recognize the Taliban? | Afghanistan’s Geopolitical Future

Did you know that in August 2021, the Taliban regained control over Afghanistan? Since then, the entire world has been watching this region closely. Afghanistan is often called the Heart of Asia, with historic trade routes linking China, Central Asia, and India.

For Russia, Afghanistan holds immense strategic importance, as instability could spread to its southern borders. Despite the Taliban takeover, Russia kept its embassy in Kabul open and continued talks with Taliban leaders.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has stated that official recognition will only be considered if the Taliban fulfills their promises on inclusive governance and human rights. Meanwhile, Russia has signed deals for oil, gas, and wheat to help support Afghanistan’s collapsing economy.

Other countries like China, Iran, Pakistan, and Qatar have also maintained relations with the Taliban, but no major power has formally recognized their government.

Experts believe Russia could be the first to recognize the Taliban—if they can guarantee human rights and control extremism.

What do you think? Will Russia officially recognize the Taliban? Is Afghanistan’s geography turning into a new global chessboard?
