Wild Alberta: The Willmore Legacy

“Wild Alberta: The Willmore Legacy” profiles the Willmore Wilderness Park, and ultimately asks the question, what will be its legacy? Located just north of Jasper National Park in Alberta, the Willmore Wilderness Park encompasses 4,600 square kilometres of pristine northern Rocky Mountain habitat. Set aside in 1959, the Park is closed to resource extraction. As a road-less area, access is limited primarily to backpackers and horse-packers. Many unique and historic backcountry opportunities are offered in the Park, such as horse-assisted hiking trips, horse-packing, hunting, trapping and outfitting. Scientific research is conducted in the area to determine numbers of grizzly bears, wolverines and the endangered mountain caribou. Will the park continue to be carefully managed? Or will it be opened in the future to resource extraction or tourism development?
