Symphony No.7 in C major - Jean Sibelius
Minnesota Symphony Orchestra conducted by Osmo Vänskä
I - Adagio - Vivacissimo - Adagio - Allegro molto moderato - Allegro moderato - Vivace - Presto - Adagio - Largamente molto - Affettuoso - Tempo I: 0:00
The seventh symphony of Sibelius was started together with the previous one and finished in 1924. The work premiered in Stockholm in March. First it was conceived in three movements, but following the integrative current observed in his last works, he condensed it in a single movement. At first he presented it as Symphonic Fantasy, but finally edited it as a Symphony.
The movement can be divided into an initial adagio, a scherzo and a rondo, ending with a return to the initial adagio. It begins with an adagio that introduces the first thematic motif, a soothing and reassuring motif, but surrounded by a hazy environment. A countermotif gives him a sweet and dreamy air. The initial theme takes a form of coral. It ends with a solemn trombone solo, before a kind of recapitulation. The lively scherzo that follows is like a progression of what happened before. The atmosphere becomes more oppressive, until the trombone solo reappears. The section in the form of rondo begins in a light way, with its dance theme introduced by the oboe. The atmosphere becomes more somber, alternating with the main theme of the rondo, until the trombone solo appears for the third time in a dramatic climax. The tremolos of the strings lead us to the final adagio, reminiscent of the previous themes, which will lead us to a hopeful end.
