The Statue of Liberty's Surprising History and Facts

The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the people of France to the United States in 1886.
Designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with the internal structure created by Gustave Eiffel (who also designed the Eiffel Tower).
Its full name is "Liberty Enlightening the World."
It stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor.
The statue is 151 feet tall (46 meters), and from the base to the torch, it's 305 feet (93 meters).

Made of copper sheets — originally a shiny reddish-brown, but it turned green due to oxidation.
Built in France, then disassembled and shipped to the U.S. in 214 crates.
The 7 spikes on the crown represent the 7 continents and 7 seas, symbolizing universal liberty.
In her left hand, she holds a tablet inscribed with July 4, 1776 (American Independence Day).
At her feet lie broken chains, representing freedom from tyranny and oppression.
Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.
Became a welcoming symbol for immigrants arriving at Ellis Island nearby.
The statue can sway up to 3 inches in high winds; the torch can sway 5 inches.
