Coriolis Effect

Counterclockwise (easterly) rotation of spherical Earth means linear rotation velocity at surface decreases from 1670 km/h at equator (40,075km/24h) to 0km/h at poles. Air masses moving from equator to poles are not connected to the surface, so are increasingly ahead, thus move clockwise/counterclockwise in northern/southern hemisphere.
