How to Remove Unwanted VST Plugins on Mac (Folder Location Explained)

On macOS, audio plugins are stored in specific system folders. If your DAW (Logic Pro, Cubase, Ableton, etc.) is showing too many unused or unwanted VST plugins, you can remove them manually from the correct location.

📁 Main Plugin Location (User Library)
~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/

Audio/Plug-Ins = where audio plugins are stored

📂 Plug-Ins Folder Structure Explained
Inside the Plug-Ins folder, you’ll see different sub-folders based on plugin format:
🔹 VST (VST2 Plugins)
~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST/

Used by Cubase, Ableton Live, Studio One, etc.

File extension: .vst

🔹 VST3 (New & Recommended Format)
~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/

Latest plugin format
File extension: .vst3

More stable and efficient than VST2

🔹 Components (AU Plugins – Logic Pro)
~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/

Used by Logic Pro & GarageBand
File extension: .component

❌ How to Delete Unwanted VST Plugins (Step-by-Step)
Open Finder
From the top menu, click Go → Go to Folder
Paste this path:
~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/

Open the required folder:

VST → for VST2 plugins

VST3 → for VST3 plugins

Components → for Logic Pro (AU) plugins

Drag the unwanted plugin file or folder to Trash

Restart your DAW (or Mac, if needed)

⚠️ Important Notes (Must Read)

✅ Close your DAW before deleting plugins
✅ Take a backup if you are unsure
❌ Do NOT delete random system files
❌ Cracked or trial plugins usually leave files here

🔁 Safer Alternative (Disable Without Deleting)

If you don’t want to permanently delete a plugin:

Move the plugin file to another folder (Backup folder)

The DAW will stop scanning it
