An Indian construction has been granted honorary citizenship in Romania after a stunning act of heroism. Vipin Kumar was awarded honorary citizenship by the Romanian city of Craiova after rescuing a five-year-old girl who fell through the ice of a frozen lake in January. Kumar, who was walking with a friend when he saw the child in trouble, jumped into the freezing water and helped keep her above the surface until emergency teams arrived. Both Kumar and the girl were treated in hospital and later recovered.

The city honoured Kumar for his actions during a ceremony attended by Ambassador Manoj Kumar Mohapatra. Speaking about the rescue, Kumar said, “I just tried to get her out of the water, that’s all I thought about. The little girl was very brave.” Local officials said they hoped his actions would inspire others. Kumar, who had moved to Romania for construction work, has received widespread praise both locally and online for his lightning response and boundless courage.
