The students will come to understand the importance of the Supreme Court decision in the case of Plessy vs. Ferguson and the effects of the “separate but equal” doctrine.
Students will learn about the formation of the NAACP and the important court battles over integrating schools. Children will realize the dangers that many African American children overcame for a better education. Viewers will come to understand how the protests led by civil rights activists such as Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks battled discrimination and helped people throughout the United States gain equal treatment in restaurants, trains and buses. The major events of the civil rights movement will come alive for students. They will learn how people, working together in a non-violent way, can change unfair laws and make America a better place for everyone to live.
