Firing-Up an Old STEEL GIANT | Oil Burning Steam Locomotive SNCF Mikado 141.R.1244

Firing-up one of the last European steel giants - an oil burning 1946 "Mikado" 141.R.1244 steam locomotive which was comissioned and used by the French State Railways - SNCF (Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français). The cold start of such a huge, oil burning machine is quite elaborate and also includes the use of a second, external steam engine to preheat the oil to make it less viscous so that it can be properly ignited. Once the oil burner is on, it takes hours to build up the steam pressure needed. A truly fascinating machine of the olden days!

The Swiss "Mikado 1244" association was founded in Zurich in 1975 with the purpose of buying, transfering and maintaining this Canadian-built steam locomotive 141.R.1244. At that time, the steam locomotive had reached the end of its service with the SNCF and had already been taken out of service. After a comprehensive restoration, the association received permission from the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) in 1977 to operate the steam locomotive on the standard gauge network. The Mikado 141.R.1244 is nowadys domiciled in the Swiss railhub-town of Brugg (Canton Aargau).
