Scrap ships at Port Colborne (Feb 2023) PAUL H. TOWNSEND gone, OJIBWAY's pilothouse gone
Scrap ships seen at Port Colborne, Feb.11, 2023. Looks like PAUL H. TOWNSEND is finally, mercifully, gone, and the beautiful old OJIBWAY is being dismembered, now seen with her pilothouse cut away. Other ships on winter layup along the Welland Canal are ALGOMA DISCOVERY, RT. HON. PAUL J. MARTIN, JOHN.D. LEITCH; above Lock 8 are CSL ASSINIBOINE and ALGOMA TRANSPORT and across from the silo is ALGOMA HARVESTER.
A closeup of ALGOMA DISCOVERY's ducted propeller propulsion system is seen at 04:12. It consists of the large shroud ring, called a Kort nozzle, which surrounds the propeller, designed to give efficient high thrust at low speed. According to Algoma, it weighs 55 tons! Within the Kort nozzle shroud, is a 4-blade, controllable-pitch propeller. In this application, there is no rudder blade that I can see - the shroud itself is pivoted to provide the 'steering'.
Some ships have a ducted-propeller system design where the Kort nozzle shroud is not moveable - it is fixed in place around the propeller, so it cannot pivot to provide steering. In that case, the ship's steering would be provided by a traditional rudder placed just past the Kort nozzle.
Speaking of all these fancy propeller terms, wonder when we'll see a laker that is built sporting one of those advanced-design toroidal propellers??! Maybe even see a design which has a Kort shroud surrounding a toroidal-bladed propeller?! Or, maybe TWIN-screw toroidal-propped Korts???!!! That would be something to see!
