Afro-Punk Documentary kickstarter video

In 2003, I made a documentary called Afro-Punk.

At the time, there was almost no conversation about what it actually felt like to be Black in punk — the microaggressions, the self-hate, the strange isolation of being the only one. The film set out to give that experience a voice.

What happened next surprised me. People started finding each other. Scenes that had existed in isolation suddenly realized they weren’t alone.

Then, over time, the film slipped out of my hands. Legal disputes. Corporate interests. For years, Afro-Punk existed only in low-resolution copies, quietly disappearing from the internet — the worst possible fate for a film about visibility.

After years of fighting, I got it back.
