One drug cartel that is notorious for its multiple rivalries, not just with other cartels, but also within the organization itself, is the Gulf Cartel. Founded almost a century ago in the 1930s, the Gulf Cartel is probably one of the oldest existing organized crime groups in Mexico. During the prohibition era, when alcohol was illegal in the United States, the Gulf Cartel smuggled alcohol and other illegal items into the country. After the prohibition era they continued to smuggle other drugs including cocaine, marijuana, heroin and meth. At a point, it was estimated that the Gulf Cartel was directly responsible for as much as one-third of all cocaine shipments into the United States. In addition to drug smuggling, the cartel also ran gambling houses, prostitution rings, and a car theft network.
