Senior Republicans reinforcing Trump's legal battle over presidential election

More senior Republicans are voicing their support for President Donald Trump as he continues to pursue legal action over claims of voter fraud in the presidential election.

United States Attorney-General William Barr last night asked the Department of Justice to follow up the president’s claims – which Mr Trump continues to voice via Twitter – and investigate claims of voter irregularities.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo similarly backed Mr Trump in his legal efforts, saying Americans could be confident in the system when the dust had settled from the election.

Asked whether he would like to see a smooth transition between Mr Trump and President-elect Joe Biden, Mr Pompeo said “there will be a smooth transition to a second Trump administration”.

“We’re ready, the world is watching what’s taking place, we’re going to count all the votes, when the process is complete there’ll be electors selected,” he said.

The most senior Republican figure in the Senate also voiced his support for Mr Trump’s legal action, saying the president had the right to pursue the legal action he was taking.

“Until the electoral college votes, anyone who is running for office can exhaust concerns about counting in any court of appropriate jurisdiction, it’s not unusual, it should not be alarming,” Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell said.

“At some point here we’ll find out here, finally, who was certified in each of these states and the electoral college will determine the winner, and that person will be sworn in on January 20, no reason for alarm.”

Several world leaders reached out to Mr Biden to congratulate him on his election victory, including British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and French President Emmanuel Macron.
