After My Mom's Stroke - Grocery Shopping At Walmart Is A Challenge (Parker, AZ)

My mom suffered a severe stroke three months ago. It didn't affect her motor skills or mobility, but it did affect her brain and mind and her ability to communicate.

She spent a few weeks at Cobalt Rehabilitation Hospital in Surprise (Phoenix), Arizona before she was sent home.

She spends most of her time at home now, but we try to get her out of the house as often as possible. She loves to go grocery shopping with me or her friends, but because she is visually impaired from macular degeneration and has difficulty communicating, because of her Wernicke's Aphasia, shopping is a big emotional trigger for her. She becomes very agitated and angry that we do not know what she wants.

Most of the time, I shop for her and bring her what she needs, to avoid getting her upset. But today, her friend Dorothy and I decided to take her with us to grocery shop at Walmart in Parker, Arizona.

It's nearly an hour away from her home, but it's the closest large grocery store to where she lives in Quartzsite, Arizona.

Communicating with someone who has aphasia can be a challenge, to say the least. So, we've learned a few tricks to keep her happy when shopping and she had a very good trip to the store, today.
