How Does Childhood Differ Between Traditional Societies and Modern Societies?
Until recently in human history, all societies were small, non-literate, without centralized political leadership, and unlike the large societies with state governments that now dominate the world. Our modern child-rearing practices constitute just a tiny and atypical slice of the ones present in those traditional small societies.
Jared Diamond, a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine, is a Pulitzer Prize winner for General Non-Fiction, and has received the National Medal of Science. He was the keynote speaker for the Sackler Colloquium Biological Embedding of Early Social Adversity.
