So, the EU almost immediately resorts to the use of strong-arm tactics by raiding the AstraZeneca vaccine laboratories in Belgium.

EU Raids AstraZeneca vaccine labs! More justification for Brexit!

Before I get into this latest hot topic of vaccines and vaccine nationalism, have you heard that the trip the PM made to Scotland to visit a vaccination centre in Castlemilk Scotland has been reported to the police as an 'unnecessary' journey.

All I can say, is that any SNP politician that gets out of bed in the morning is making a totally 'unnecessary' journey.

And, Brussels is getting desperate. I did say yesterday that the EU Commission would start thrashing about as the vaccine heat was turned up.

And as this pie chart made up from data provided by OneWorldInData.org shows you exactly why the EU is so miffed. The UK share of the vaccines compared to the EU27 is the big blue sector on the left.

So, in response to AstraZeneca telling the EU that it might be up to 75 million vaccine doses short on the EU 100 million dose order, the EU Commission orders the EU Medicines Agency to raid the company's offices.

As far as I can tell, Eurocrats do not believe the AstraZeneca side of the story for the shortfall, so have raided their factory to find evidence of AstraZeneca smuggling vaccines out of the EU and into the UK.

That the EU supply chain is operating at full pelt, but with the UK paying over the odds to get its hands on the vaccines.

And the Belgian health minister, Frank Vandenbroucke, said that the aim of the 'spot check' was to:

"... make sure that the delay in the delivery of the vaccines is actually due to a production problem in the Belgian unit."

And other EU member states were also involved in the raid, with a spokesman for Vandenbroucke saying it was to make sure there was full transparency and objectivity helped by experts from the Netherlands, Italy and Spain.

Great to see the trust that the EU has in the UK shining through, isn't it?

But the bad news for the UK is that it looks like Boris might cave into EU demands that vaccines destined for UK citizens could be diverted to the EU.

The Express is reporting that:

"This afternoon No10 appeared to have caved to pressure from the EU when a Downing Street official declined to rule out the possibility of UK vaccines being sent to the EU before every adult in Britain had been offered ajab.

"The Prime Minister's spokesman refused to rule out UK supplies could be sent to the continent as early as the middle of next month."

And that could, of course, place a drag anchor around the ankles of the UK vaccine programme delivery.

And place an albatross around the neck of Boris Johnson as he tries to explain why the whole lockdown process might need to be extended. Including keeping schools shut.

Manna from heaven for the Labour Party leader Keir Starmer, who has just opened up a four point lead over Boris in a recent YouGov poll.

And only yesterday Boris Johnson and Michael Gove were waxing lyrical about the robustness of our vaccine contracts and supply chains.

But I did find a copy of a redacted UK contract with AstraZeneca on the government website dated the 28th August 2020 for the supply of AZD1222.

With the contract value being one pound - so as to hide the cost per dose to the UK taxpayer.

And the contract is being delivered on the basis of 'best reasonable efforts'.
