Fairy variations from Ashton's CINDERELLA
The Royal Ballet's 2003 production. A true Dream Team cast featuring Alina Cojocaru as Cinderella, Isabel McMeekan as the Fairy Godmother, Christina Salerno as Fairy Spring, Lauren Cuthbertson as Fairy Summer, Laura Morera as Fairy Autumn and Zenaida Yanowsky as Fairy Winter.
This delightful Pas de cinq could've easily been included in one of my Ballet Mime series, as Ashton cleverly incorporated several mime gestures into the choreography to symbolize the nature and attributes of the different fairies, very much like Petipa did in "The Sleeping Beauty". Fusing mime and dancing in this manner is the perfect way to enhance the narrative of the variations, which are no longer mere divertissements, and to match through movement the expressive qualities heard in the music.
