Carol II of Romania

Carol II was the controversial King of Romania from 1930 to 1940. The son of King Ferdinand I, he was the first Romanian monarch to be brought up in the Orthodox Church. His private life caused a scandal and caused him to renounce his rights of succession in favor of his son Prince Michael who became nominal king in 1927. However, in 1930 he returned to Romania and was proclaimed King. He had previously supported the Iron Guard but turned against them as a threat to the monarchy. Instead he built up his own monarchist organizations such as the "National Renaissance Front" and "The Sentinel" to rally public and youth support for the monarchy. However, he was opposed by the Soviets and the Nazis and he was finally overthrown by the pro-Nazi government of Ion Antonescu. He was replaced by his son who refused to ever see his father again. Carol II went into exile for the rest of his life. He died in Portugal in 1953.
