Dr. Laudat Discusses the Benefits of WASP at Laboratoire Arnaud in Tours France

Dr. Patrice Laudat, Head of Microbiology at Laboratoire Arnaud in Tours, France discusses the use of WASP® in his laboratory and the benefits he has experienced since its installation. Using WASP®, Dr. Laudat has seen an increase in productivity, more consistent results, high reproducibility, quantitative analysis and increased traceability which helps to achieve accreditation in laboratories.

00:01 Hello, my name is Dr. Patrice Laudat and I am Head of Microbiology at Laboratoire Arnaud in Tours, located right in the middle of France. We are part of a group of laboratories that encompasses ten laboratories and that is about to include four additional laboratories in the near future.

00:28 Laboratoire Arnaud is a group that includes some private clinics and we manage the full range of analysis. The different disciplines include cardiac surgery, orthopaedic, ophthalmology as well as pneumology and a maternity department with over 3,000 births per year.

01:17 In addition to the great variety of disciplines, there are a total of 1,500 beds that require us to provide diagnostics, both in terms of clinical microbiology, surveillance and screening.

01:40 At this location we are mainly dedicated to clinical microbiology and molecular biology. We have eight lab technicians all specialized in microbiology and two microbiologists doctors, myself and my colleague Dr. Anne Holstein.

02:08 The laboratory also includes an internal IT department, as well as a Quality Assurance engineer, and a total of ten associate directors, part of the board of directors. The laboratory operates over a 24 hours shift, 7 days a week in order to cope with urgent requests.

02:51 I happened to see the WASP® system for the first time at the ECCMID congress in Barcelona in 2008. I was immediately impressed with the level of technology that the system incorporated and this was, for me, something completely new and innovative and that stack out in comparison to the alternative systems available in the market. I went to Barcelona, invited by the team of Siemens France for the Microscan system (Philippe Arowas).

03:24 WASP® was installed here in May of 2010.

3:30 The WASP® was primarily intended for automated processing of primary bacteriology samples, essentially urine samples, stool samples and swabs for MRSA and ESBL screening, as well as genital swabs and bronco aspirates samples.

03:58 The lab in fact receives a high volume of sputa sample, approximately 2,200 mycobacterium per annum. Just to give an idea of the volume that the lab handles.

04:23 Those are the specimens that we initially processed on WASP®, we then progressively extended the use of the WASP® to all bacteriology specimens and we achieved this by changing our pre analytical phase by introducing Copan ESwab™.

04:40 The laboratory is open from 8:00am to 8:00pm and WASP® is operational throughout the working day and only for urgencies on Sunday morning. WASP® allows us quite easily to cope with all the routine daily workload as well as with urgencies.

05:14 The WASP® has been installed and interfaced to the LIS within 48 hours from its delivery. On day three we started to train the laboratory technicians on how to operate the system.
