Vice President Kashim Shettima has shared an unusual story from the 2023 presidential campaign, revealing that he gave President Bola Tinubu traditional Borno outfits to wear during campaign activities across Northern Nigeria.

Speaking in Abuja during the launch of former Head of State Yakubu Gowon’s autobiography, Shettima said controversy emerged after the election when some visitors from Borno allegedly advised Tinubu to stop wearing the outfits.

According to the Vice President, the visitors claimed he had “charmed” the clothing and alleged the outfits could endanger Tinubu’s life so that Shettima could eventually become president.

Shettima said President Tinubu dismissed the claims immediately, arguing that the accusation made little sense because both of them were only presidential aspirants when the traditional outfits were originally given.

To demonstrate confidence and reject the allegations, Tinubu reportedly continued wearing the Borno outfits deliberately for an entire week.

Using the incident as an example, Shettima criticised what he described as rising suspicion, mistrust, and conspiracy thinking within Nigeria’s political environment.

He contrasted the situation with historical relationships built on trust and mutual respect, referencing the past bond between former head of state Yakubu Gowon and the family of the Sultan of Sokoto, where gifts and goodwill were exchanged without fear or political suspicion.

Shettima also paid tribute to Gowon, describing him as a respected national statesman whose contributions included the establishment of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

He praised Gowon’s autobiography as an important contribution to preserving Nigeria’s history, national memory, and unity.
