Overcoming Distress: The Threat, Drive and Soothe Systems

This model was derived by Paul Gilbert as part of Compassion-Focussed Therapy.

For people who are prone to Distress, the soothe system is often underdeveloped and that means that people are either stuck in a state of Threat or in a state of Drive. There’s not much scope to recover or de-escalate Distress without a capacity to Soothe. We get into ways to activate your Soothe system to better manage emotional Distress. That will need some self compassion. Really.

We talk about how the Threat/Drive/Soothe systems relate, when they are useful and how that fits into a Schema Mode conceptualisation. We discuss how the Distress tolerance is improved by utilisation of the soothe system.
