Operation Alchemia — ’Ndrangheta Mafia infiltrates large rail link project

Operation Alchemia — on July 19, 2016, police in Italy swooped to arrest more than 40 people suspected of being members or associates of the ’Ndrangheta, the Calabian Mafia, who were forcing their way into contracts for the Terzo Valico, a 6.2-billion-euro project for a new high-speed rail line linking Genoa and Milan. The men and women were detained in Calabria, Lazio region near Rome, and Liguria and Piedmont in the north. The charges centre on the Raso-Gullace-Albanese and Parrello-Gagliostro clans. About 40 million euros worth of property, businesses and bank accounts were also seized by authorities. Authorities alleged that the mobsters had links to regional as well as local politicians. The investigation was led by the Polizia di Stato and the Direzione Investigativa Antimafia (DIA.)
