Teri Polo: ‘The Phantom Of The Opera’ TV Miniseries (1990)

A disfigured musician named Erik lives below Opéra Garnier in Paris. He has a large part in managing each performance through his friend Gerard Carriere. The Phantom's life changes when Carriere is dismissed and the opera hires a new manager.

Christine Daae (Played by Teri) comes to the Paris Opera House in search of voice lessons that the Comte de Chagny promised her. That night, Christine sings to the empty theater and the Phantom is immediately entranced by her voice. Hiding in the orchestra pit, he tells her that her voice is miraculous but untrained, and with proper technique her singing could reach its full potential. He offers to be her teacher, but must remain anonymous, which is why he wears a mask. They begin lessons, and the Phantom falls deeper in love with her. The romantic interest that Erik has for Christine stems from her striking resemblance to his mother Belladova (also played by Teri), who died of a fever while he was a child.

Erik assists in having Christine's talent as singer discovered at a company Bistro. Christine's big break as a performer arises when Carlotta refuses to sing the role of Marguerite in ‘Faust’, so she takes the role. Carlotta deceives her into drinking a tonic which is supposed to calm the nerves, but it is a drug that disables her voice and she is boo-ed off stage. In a fit of outrage at Christine's mistreatment, Erik cuts the rope holding up the chandelier and takes her down to his lair.

Gerard Carriere is able to talk with Christine, and explains Erik's past and why he wears the mask. She cannot be convinced to leave Erik's lair. Christine consents to have a picnic in his 'forest'. While on this "picnic," Christine convinces him to remove his mask, but she faints in horror. Erik is now emotionally crushed. When Christine wakes up, she sees Erik literally destroying his lair with his bare hands. For fear of her life, she eventually runs out and find her way back up to the Opera House.

As Christine falls ill and is plagued by guilt-ridden nightmares, she confesses to Phillipe that she loves Erik but reassures him that it is a different kind of love from what she feels for him. She and Phillipe convince the theatre manager to allow her to sing Marguerite in ‘Faust’, so that the ‘Phantom’ will be brought out from his lair. During the prison scene, Christine is able to see Erik in Box Five and sings to him. Overtaken by the emotions of the moment, Erik comes out of hiding and sings the role of Faust back to her.

The audience loves the exchange between Christine and Erik, but the police have a job to do. Bullets are fired at Erik, but they miss him. A chase occurs, as Erik jumps onto the stage and takes Christine with him. This time, they go to the top of the Opera House. A fight breaks out between Erik and Phillipe, but Erik saves and then spares his life at Christine's pleading. Unfortunately, the police have Erik surrounded. Keeping his promise to Erik, Carriere shoots him. As Erik lay dying in his fathers arms, Christine runs to him, gently removes his mask and kisses him on the forehead. As she looks at his face and smiles, Erik dies peacefully with his father and Christine at his side. Christine replaces Erik's mask and is led away by Phillipe.
