my 7 BIGGEST tips to save money on travel

How I Save $$ Traveling ⬇️

Travel can be expensive between hotels, flights, museums, and food. Finding ways to cut costs, even a little bit, can add up.  Here's how I turn those small cuts into BIG savings!

🛎️ Hotels can eat up a lot of your budget.  Most likely you won't see the inside of your room except for when it's time to sleep, so spending extra for luxury is a waste.  Simply decorated is fine for me- all I need is a bed and bathroom.  Look for accommodations that are clean and safe and save that extra money on gelato!

🛒 Consider grocery shopping.  If you're gonna be in one place for several nights, save money by not eating out every day.  Even getting simple items like coffee and breakfast eats can easily save you $20/ day.  For less than $10, you can turn spaghetti and sauce into dinner for 4!

🛏️ Consider hostels.  Ok, listen, after seeing the horror movie years ago, I decided hostels weren't for me. However, in my recent 2-month solo trip through Europe, I found some fun, clean, and safe hostels and it totally changed my mind.  These can be around $30-$70/ night and if you have 4-6 of you traveling together, you may be able to reserve the entire room together!

🌋 Travel during the off-season.  Prices hike up during busy tourist seasons no matter where you go.  Plus it's over-crowded, which not fun for anyone.  Take advantage of the lower off-season prices and you may even be able to spring for that fancy dinner spot with the money you saved.

💳 Play with points & miles.  Look I know you hear it all the time, but I've paid for so many hotels, business class flights, and excursions using points from our Capital One Venture X card.  We don't purchase anything with it that we wouldn't already buy, and earn points every step of the way.  I even pay our health insurance premium with it! If I'm forking over thousands a year for health insurance, you better believe I'm squeezing out all the points I can.

🛟 Pay less for inconveniences.  It may be that room without the view, or a different cruise to an alternate destination, but you're still traveling!  I once took a 14-day repositioning cruise one-way to the UK for cheap ($700!)  Sure it was one-way and had more sea days than average, but it was a super comfy and affordable way to get to London, plus it had me seeing Portugal, Belgium, France, and the Netherlands!

📆 Be flexible and book what's on sale. This is a BIG tip, but you have to be flexible.  I've saved THOUSANDS by looking at what's on sale now, and creating travel plans around those deals.  It might not be the exact itinerary or dates you had in mind, but you're still crossing destinations off your list and you might find a fave new city to love.
