It’s hard loving a guy who you can’t see every day or even once a week. But if it’s meant to be, you can overcome the distance, with a little help.

Don’t overdo it. The benefit of texting is that you can reach each other 24/7 but this can also be a drawback. If you’re not careful, texting can turn into a burden. You don’t want him thinking he has to always be available to talk to you at a moment’s notice. With this in mind, don’t worry if he doesn’t respond for a few hours and update you on every little thing.

While we’re on the subject, don’t say “I miss you” too much. This is an easy trap to fall into because you’re both feeling this way and it can be romantic. But if you overdo this phrase it can become stale or even make him resentful. After the fifth time you say “I miss you” in a day he may be thinking “What am I supposed to do about it?” Instead, mix up your language. “I can’t wait to see you again” is a great way to spin it that puts things in a more positive light. It also invites conversation about what you’re going to do when you’re back together.

Go beyond texting. Try skype, phone calls and facetime whenever possible. This can be a daunting step but it really does allow you to communicate in different ways than texting and it’s always nice to mix things up. If you’re able to video chat on your phone, show him what he’s been missing at home or take him on a tour of the new city over skype! Even if it’s just to see where he’s staying during the trip, sharing these moments will bring you closer together and give you things to talk about when you’re texting later.

Keep it sexy. For those in LDRs, it’s important to maintain all areas of your relationship. That’s why I often encourage my clients to sext, send nudes, and have phone sex if they’re comfortable. This is only for those who are in a committed relationship with someone they trust but if you can get over the awkwardness it can really help you open up in ways that you wouldn’t if you were in the same place. It’s a good opportunity to get naughty and go deep into fantasy roleplaying knowing that it’s all just make believe. You also want to remind them what they’re missing. If your guy is shy or clueless, try breaking the ice by asking what he’s wearing.

Compliment him in new ways. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Use this to your advantage by complimenting him on things you never have before. Think of what you miss about him. Think about how things are different now that he’s gone. Don’t be afraid to get sappy and romantic.

Make a ritual. For some couples, texting first thing when you wake up or before you fall asleep is very important. Little rituals like this are important and provide comfort to both of you. Whether it’s sharing pictures of your lunch everyday or some dumb inside joke, it helps to have these touchstones. It allows closeness and familiarity even at a great distance.
