What is Retina ? | Who Needs a Retina Check ? #retina #retinahealth #dholakiaeyecare
You may have heard the word “retina” from someone or your ophthalmologist. But have you ever wondered what the retina actually is?
In this informative video, Dr. Miloni Shah – Vitreoretinal & Cataract Surgeon at Dholakia Eye Care, Mumbai, explains the retina in simple terms and why it's so important to get it screened regularly.
What is Retina?
The retina is a light-sensitive layer located at the back of your eye. It works just like the film in a camera – capturing the image and sending signals to the brain so that you can see clearly. Without a healthy retina, clear vision is not possible.
Who Should Get Retina Screening?
1. Patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol (dyslipidemia)
If you suffer from any of these systemic conditions, your retina must be screened at least once every year. These issues can lead to diabetic or hypertensive retinopathy, which often start silently and without symptoms.
2. People with a family history of retinal disease
If someone in your family has had retinal disorders, it's important to get your retina checked regularly, even if you have no symptoms.
3. Individuals above 50 years of age
As you age, you become more prone to conditions like Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), which can affect central vision. Early detection is key.
4. People with high spectacle power (especially high myopia)
If you have a high minus number in your glasses, you may be at risk for retinal breaks or tears. A retina specialist can examine your peripheral retina carefully and detect early signs.
5. People experiencing retinal symptoms
If you notice:
- Flashes of light
- Floaters (black spots or threads in vision)
- Sudden drop in vision
- A curtain-like shadow over your vision
These could be signs of serious retinal conditions like retinal detachment, which requires urgent attention. Do not delay – visit your nearest retina specialist immediately.
Remember:
Retinal diseases often begin silently. Many patients lose vision because they wait too long. Early diagnosis and timely treatment can save your vision.
