Build a Cedar Privacy Fence, Part 1 – Install the Posts

This is Part 1 of 4 videos that document the process of building a custom 7’ cedar privacy fence:

Part 1: Install the Posts
Part 2: Install the Backer Rails
Part 3: Install the Pickets
Part 4: Seal the Fence

The total cost of this 96’ long 7’ high cedar fence (6’ pickets and 1’ windows): $6,032

We purchased our 40-year-old retirement home in Sequim, Washington for the amazing view of the Olympic Mountains, not to watch and hear the vehicles and pedestrians passing by on the community road in front of our house. The solution for an immediate fix? Install a privacy fence.

Our objective was to reduce the visibility and the noise of cars, trucks and pedestrians that travel on the often busy community road in front of our house so that we could sit out on our new composite deck and enjoy our beautiful garden and the panoramic view of the Olympic Mountains while sipping a glass of wine, often in the company of friends. Diane and I discussed several options: planting an evergreen hedge, building a landscaped berm, or installing a solid wood fence. Although the hedge and berm would be more in harmony with our landscaping, it would take years of growth to appreciate the privacy benefits, whereas an attractive custom-built cedar fence would provide immediate results. And a fence would be much less maintenance. We contacted several landscape contractors for estimates, and we chose Bayside Landscape & Pruning, mostly because of the friendly personality of Mathew, the owner, and the rave review he got from our next-door neighbor on the quality and attention to details of his work.
