Maynard the African Grey

This was 2nd time I visited Maynard. Maynard was adored cuddles on my arm and scritches before the toe nail trimming.
------Maynard was imported from Africa in 1984 as an adult male and was bought by a breeder and taken to Oregon. He was penned with a wild caught female and the 2 were so ferocious that the owners were afraid to but their hands in the cage to change the food and water. The female soon died and Maynard was kept alone in his cage for the next 30 years, although he was in a large area with lots of other breeding birds in cages. The owners adult son took an interest in Maynard and talked to him but never tried to handle him or let him out of his cage. Eventually the breeder retired and a California friend took the remaining few birds to California in 2014 to try and find homes for them. Shelley the mom had always wanted an African Grey and jumped at the chance to try and give Maynard a new life. He now lives with lots of toys and puzzles to figure out and is a happy member of the family. At times he talks in a very deep man's voice. He still doesn't like to be handled but is perfectly willing to give kisses and accept head scritches. By Joan Cotter
