Cameron Hagaman: 'Elapsy' for Flute and Live Electronics (2023)

Pre-concert talk ends at 2:00.

'Elapsy' is a minimalist solo flute piece written in conjunction with live electronics. Consists of 3 small movements each around 3-5 minutes. The 3 movements put into sound the mental decline of my childhood as I learned to live with epilepsy. The first movement written for piccolo sets the tone, first introducing the repetitive motif that will appear throughout the work in several variations. The second movement written for alto flute illustrates the slow decline into depression with chromatic runs and variations of the main melody and more intense electronic effects. The third movement written for base flute expresses a kind of cathartic release as I learn to live with my disorder, and presents the melody in a more somber, hopeful, and slightly haunting tone.

Written for and performed by the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players.

Performed by Tom Brody (Flute) and Garrett Nothern (Electronics).
