I just received a new toy for my DSLR - the MIOPS Smart Trigger. If you don’t know what the MIOPS trigger is, then watch this video to learn more about it. It is a must have device for high speed photography, and will help with lightning photography, time lapses. and more. Great for creative photographers who have a vision but needed a device to control their DSLR very precisely.

Think of it as a remote shutter release, but instead of pressing a button it will take the shot when one of its sensors detects sound, light, or many other changes.

The MIOPS is a smart trigger than can be used to control your camera or flash (or both) for a variety of photography styles. It’s primary benefits are for high speed photography, but with it’s different sensors and functions, there are actually many uses.

The core features the MIOPS trigger boasts about are:

1. Lightning mode - will help you capture those fantastic lightning photos with must less effort. It has a built in sensor to detect sudden light change. So when the lightning flash appears it will take the shot for you.
2. Sound mode - this will take a shot (or trigger a flash) when it hears sound. This can be used to catch very fast action, like a water balloon bursting, glass breaking, and many more.
3. Laser mode - aim a laser pointer (on a stand) at the MIOPS trigger. When the beam is broken, it will take a photo. This can use used for wildlife shots, capturing falling objects (like ice into a glass) and any scenario when an object will pass through a beam.
4. Time-lapse - not sensor driven, but you set the parameters and it will take the photos. Set the interval, the exposure length, and the limit/# photos, and you can sit back and relax.
5. HDR - similar to time-lapse, it will take a number of shots with the +/- points in exposure that you set. No need to touch your camera between each. It will do it all.
6. Scenario model - you can combine multiple sensor inputs to create your own customer mode
