In this series of videos I cover jazz piano voicings. I'll go through a number of different voicings which will make any jazz song sound strong and professional.
This Jazz Piano Tutorial is about Quartal Chord Voicings. This is simply a chord built in 4ths rather than 3rds. Building chords in thirds is considered old-fashioned and simplistic. While building in 4ths is considered much more sophisticated and ‘modern’.
However, Chord built in 4ths are much more ambiguous. They give a very suspended feel – like playing sus chords - and don't sound like they need to resolve.
Quartal Chords can be a number of different chords, depending on context and the surrounding chords.
Even though we are build chords in 4ths we can still analyse them like regular chords.
Standard Quartal Voicing use 5 notes - but this can be dropped to 4 or 3 or increased to 6 - and are generally played in the middle register of the piano.
In this lesson I go through the 'generic quartal chord voicings' and explain how to find your own quartal chord.
