I then used a variety of gutter attachments to divert the water to my rain barrel. I used a utility knife to cut a 3"x 2" opening at the top of the lid and pool skimmer sock to prevent bugs and debris from entering my rain barrel. Total cost was about $50 and now I can have free water for life. I mainly use this rain barrel collection system for gardening and to wash off my hands. This is a simple easy rain collection system. You can even upgrade to a larger 50 gal or 55 gal rain collecting barrel in the future. The 32gal was just right for me. I use a 2" x 3" gutter tubing to divert water into my pool. In the hot summer months my 15 gallon pool can lose 1" to 2" so my gutter diversion setup helps to replenish it.
