Missile Barrage Knocks Out Odesa Power Plant—Blackout Hits 1 Million, 18 May
Russia launched a pre-dawn Kalibr cruise-missile strike that knocked out Odesa’s biggest thermal-power plant at 03:14 a.m. on 18 May 2025, Ukraine’s Southern Air Command said. Air-defence crews downed two of four missiles, but the others slammed into the turbine hall, igniting transformers and cutting electricity to more than one million residents. The State Emergency Service reported eight injured plant workers and warned of water-supply interruptions. Mayor Hennadii Khymaha declared a week-long state of emergency, while President Volodymyr Zelenskyy renewed calls for additional Patriot and SAMP/T systems to protect the Black-Sea coast. Russia’s defence ministry said it targeted “military-industrial capacity”; satellite images reviewed by Reuters show extensive roof damage and smoke plumes visible from 30 km offshore.
