Before Mario, Sonic, Crash, or any of the platforming legends took over my life, my first real platform game was Smurf: Rescue in Gargamel’s Castle. This 1982 Coleco classic put you in control of a Smurf trying to rescue Smurfette from Gargamel, jumping over fences, avoiding hazards, and somehow making a cute cartoon world feel like a tiny blue survival test.

This video is a nostalgic look back at the first platform game I ever played, why Smurf Rescue stuck with me, and how a simple little game from the early days of home consoles helped shape my love of video games. It may not be the biggest retro game ever, but for me, this was where platforming started.
