The operation of transporting Syrian citizens from al-Hawl camp continues after the Kurdish Autonomous Administration and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) allowed the return of 120 displaced families from the refugee camp located to the east of Hasakah city, to their homes in different parts of Syria including Deir ez-Zor, al-Hasakah, Qamishli, and Aleppo.

Footage from Monday shows the camp, situated on the outskirts of the town of al-Hawl in Syria's Hasakah Governorate, hosting individuals displaced from territories formerly controlled by the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIL/ISIS), including the relatives of alleged Islamic State fighters.

“Today, the first trip begins in terms of numbers of individuals and families after the Autonomous Administration issued the recent decision on October 10, 2020... There are approximately 515 people and 120 families, mostly from the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor,” said Sheikhmos Ahmed, the head of the Displaced and Refugees Office in the Autonomous Administration.

“I am from al-Susah village and very happy that we are returning to it after spending two years here. When the bombings began, I ran away with my children. Today, I am returning there but life will be more difficult than here I don't know what happened to my house,” added another displaced man.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), as of October 4th, the camp holds approximately 64,619 people, 48 percent of which are Iraqis (30,824), 37 percent Syrians (24,325), and 15 percent are third-country nationals (9,462).

Over the past eight weeks, at least 1,000 individuals have reportedly been released from the camp, the majority said to be Syrian nationals. At least 18 children with foreign citizenship have also been repatriated to other countries including Russia, Canada, and the UK.

Previously, we’ve operated four [relocation] operations based on guarantees, but this is the first trip operated without guarantees from tribal leaders. There are approximately 515 people and 120 families, mostly from the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor."

SOT, Aisha al-Saleem, Syrian woman from Deir Ezzor countryside (Arabic): “We left the village of al-Susah and are returning to it now. That was two years ago when the war and bombing began. Our houses and properties were destroyed and we are returning to start from scratch."

SOT, Fatima Abdullah, Syrian woman from Deir Ezzor countryside (Arabic): "We left Baghuz nearly two and a half years ago when the war began there. The situation in the camp is not good in terms of the way they treat us, but still better than there. When we will return there will be nothing left, no houses, nothing at all. Life will be difficult there."

SOT, Mohammed al-Daher, Syrian man from Deir Ezzor countryside (Arabic): "I am from al-Susah village and very happy that we are returning to it after spending two years here.
