Indira Gandhi interview on food shortage problem (1)

Interview with Mrs. Gandhi forms nucleus of report on India, where starvation may this year kill five million people if the present drought continues. "Tremendous unity and determined effort" are required to cope with the food shortage problem, now being alleviated by shipments of wheat from the USA. Views of Mrs. Gandhi and a Delhi industrialist are optimistic, the former believing it possible to "create a new outlook among the people" and describing the success of the family planning campaign, the latter stating that the standards of living is constantly rising and that India could become an industrial nation. Reporter focuses on the difficulty of breaking the vicious circle of poverty, famine and overpopulation, and the survival of the caste system.
