Welcome to the Middle East!

There's an old Far Side joke with a husband and wife in their car looking at a map labeled "NOWHERE" and the sign on the street outside says "ENTERING THE MIDDLE." Always loved that one!

Imagine if the map said "EAST" instead? Well then you'd get a glimpse into this chapter of my life, except for I don't bother with maps, and I don't have a wife. I like to keep my travels... unencumbered, shall we say! :)

This video goes back to the days before I ever took video when I traveled, but I did take some nice pictures, and I cut them to one of my favorite songs! This is my sojourn into the Middle East, and specifically the fascinating country of Jordan. Jordan is home to Djinn genies, Djinn Blocks, vast beautiful sprawling red deserts like Wadi Rum, and the RED SEA (though the sea isn't technically red!).

It's also home to the elusive and mysterious PETRA, an ancient city built by relief carving into cliff faces. Historians have no idea who built it, other than a "nomadic people" known as the Nabateans.

I say it was built by Djinn Genies!!

Here is a story I have from the day I visited Petra. Just to let people know how I ALMOST got a wife...

My First Marriage Proposal

I was briskly hiking through Petra, the most amazing place I have ever seen. I was feeling quite alive, to put it mildly. I'm midway through the Siq, when suddenly, I'm stopped by a Bedouin girl harking Jewelry. Now if you've never seen a Bedouin before, they are like an Arab version of Eastern European Gypsy.

Lots of bling and fancy cheap jewelry, patterned dresses, and simply stunning. Carmel brown skin, deep dark eyes like an Oasis, thick black eye makeup, and sand irked into their pours that lends a roughness to their beauty.

These my friends, are the women of the desert.

We talked a bit before she simply said "I love your eyes" This, I found refreshing. Foregoing all my bland rules to never return a females compliment with one of my own, I chose to be quite honest and responded with "Your eyes are beautiful too." It was a graceful departure.

Much later that same down, on the hike back down from the Monastery, I heard a female voice say:

"Hey...you dropped your camera."

I knew that I hadn't, so I turned to her and said "You are lying!"

She laughed and said "Yes, I am. The thing is, my friend thinks you're hot..."

I glanced to her Bedouin friend. She was Arabic beauty defined. Her exotic eyes met mine and I said: "Well tell your friend I think shes beautiful."

Instantly, this girls light brown face complexion turned a beat red. She was shy, and unable to make eye contact with me.

I said: "Here, I'll tell you what. I am going back to America soon. Why don't you both come with me? We can get married together and Ill introduce you to my country."

They giggled with excitement. Ultimately, my proposal didn't work out.

No worries, I continued happily along my journey...
