Standard runway for landing in Zurich is runway 14. Runway 28 and runway 16 are usually used for takeoffs. In the morning and evening hours and during periods of winds which are not in favor for runway 14, runway 28 or runway 34 is used for landing.

The video shows an approach on a very nice day with westerly winds. The approach starts over Lake Zurich and continues for the downwind leg in the direction of Lake Constance. Long before arriving at the Lake Constance, a turn has to be flown to the extended centerline of runway 28. The city of Kloten (which gives the airport the name) is located underneath and left of the approach almost directly infront of runway 28.

Runway 28 is 2500 meters long and 60 meters wide. Due to the mountains in the approach, the glidepath is with 3.3 degrees steeper than the standard 3.0 degrees. For the same reason, the decision altitude for the ILS (instrument landing system) approach is with 670 feet over the threshold (2090 feet MSL) much higher than the usual 200 feet. Elevation of runway 28 is 1416 feet. During the video, we were flying the RNAV Approach for runway 28. This approach is based on GPS-naviation and the minimum descent altitude was 770 feet over the threshold of the runway: 2190 feet MSL.
