I have some family over during the holidays, and I've been helping them with their computers, as its running very slowly, whereas several months ago it was blazing fast. So I'm curious as to why Windows breaks down so much?

It seems to me, that Windows needs to be completely wiped and re-installed periodically, which is something most people don't have the time for. I do understand that there are some factors as to how computers slow down and why Windows needs to be reinstalled periodically, which is commonly due to "crapware" and malware, although my family's computers all have a good antivirus software, and do not have lots of software running, nor do they have any "crapware" Even if all software is up to date.

I've been using Ubuntu for a while, and it's still blazing fast even months after installing it, it doesn't hog up any of my resources.
I have also tried doing many performance tweaks, such as cleaning the physical machine, uninstalling old software, disabling themes, and even using CCleaner, and yet Windows continues to break down and be a huge pain. Was Windows just poorly built?
