USING THE FUJIFILM X-T2 FOR VIDEO PRODUCTION. 4 REAL WORLD PROS AND CONS OF THIS MIRRORLESS CAMERA

This video looks at the good and the bad of the Fujifilm X-T2 for video production. It is my assesment of this camera in a video style workflow.

Although many people know me from my YouTube channel where I talk about photography, my real degree of expertise is in making videos. It is the way in which I make my money. I have been doing video production for the last 10 years of my life. Sometimes I find myself in a situation where more than one camera is needed to do a production. This often occurs for event video, interview videos and the like. My Canon 80D is my primary camera but I find myself in a situation where I use multiple cameras.

Accidentally discovering the XT2 for video

I had initially bought my Fujifilm XT2 to take stills but found myself in the weird position the other day where decided to vlog about a photo shoot using the Canon EOS 80D for stills (My primary video camera). Because of this I found myself looking for a camera to document the whole event. I had known from many others that the XT2 was no slouch at video. I used it for the shoot and found the video to be quite exceptional.

My first impressions about the X-T2 as a video camera are the following:

Please understand that this is not a detailed review of this camera for video shooting but more of an assessment of my impressions. Here are some points I wanted to talk about while using this camera.

• Low light is decent
• Optic options are fun
• 4K is pretty darned good
• Boost grip offers great video options
• Audio quality of the on board mics is terrible

Low light on the Fujifilm X-T2 is really decent.

I was forced to use the X-T2 to film a behind the scenes video where there is absolutely no ambient light at all. It can tend to be annoying but I have no choice because I have to kill ambient light for the flash settings on the stills camera. Through experience, I have noticed that on these behind the scenes photo shoots the 80D and the 16-35mm f/2.8 would always perform very well. Giving me graininess but nothing to write home about. The same can be said for the X-T2 stills camera. It performed quite well in this almost pitch black environment.

Optic options in the Fuji world are fun.

The actual Fuji ecosystem, although small, sports some fine glass. Even their lower class glass is amazing. Also vintage glass via adapters is there as well. One of the places where vintage glass on a digital bodies shine is in the video workflow. It offers you a more human look. I personally really like to use vintage glass on anything pertaining to a human interest interview. Not only the Fuji X-T2 but all mirrorless cameras have great adaptability.
Pretty good 4K

4K is excellent. Check out my sample footage. 4K on the Fuji is surprisingly pretty great.

Optional battery grip gives some really fun video options
Boost mode with the optional grip gives you, longer video, less overheating and a stable and reliable environment. You also lose the 10 minute recording limit that you have on the X-T2 without the grip.

Audio quality is very bad

Audio quality is atrocious but the level meters and other options are really sweet. In the future I will definitely be using an external mic. I have done some A/B tests with the Canon EOS 80D and the difference in quality is quite remarkable. The 80D just covers the frequency range so much better than the Fuji X-T2. This is also not by just a little bit either. The 80D's on board sound is stunningly better.
