Sharks escaping red tide fill West Florida canals
The canals of Buttonwood Harbour aren't usually home to sharks, but hundreds of bonnethead, lemon, and nurse sharks trying to survive red tide have found themselves gathered there indefinitely.
In the canals of Buttonwood Harbour, Janelle Branowner noticed an unusual sight. There were hundreds of sharks: bonnethead, lemon and nurse sharks crowded into the canal. She recorded some video on her phone and called the experts, who said red tide is likely to blame.
Air stones that bubble water into the canal at Buttonwood could be helping oxygen levels. Mote Marine Laboratory has sampled the water. Senior biologist Jack Morris recorded the water temperature at 90 degrees and said oxygen levels are depleting. If red tide continues, Morris said the sharks could run out of time.
