HD: The Leslie RS5T - "The King of All Train Horns"
**Please Watch in HD**
In this video you will find two rarities. The first one is the Leslie RS5T. As of March 2010, few Leslie RS5T's remain on CSX power. Many of the Leslie airhorns are being replaced by Nathan Airchime products. Sadly, the newer Nathan K5LA's sound less than stellar as compared to some of the older K5LA's found during the Chessie era.
Also of importance is the location of the horn itself. Over the last year, CSXT has been moving the airhorns from above the cab, back towards the middle of the units. This was done to reduce the noise issues with crews. Units with the horns still mounted above the cab are getting more and more difficult to catch.
I have to say, after listening to one of these horns in person they must surely are the "king of all train horns". I was able to hear them coming several minutes before they arrived. You can tell how loud the horn is by the muffled sound that you hear once the engine passes the camera. The camera's microphone was being put to the test!
Please watch the video until the end. The Leslie RS5T gives off a haunting tone as it retreats in the distance. Sadly I was not around when the Leslie RS5T ruled the railroads, I sure wouldn't have minded hearing that outside my window!
Please Share this video with any Leslie airhorn fans you know!
