[4K] Hanami in Berlin / Teltow - 1100 cherry trees on the former border strip

The fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification also triggered joy and enthusiasm in Japan.
A Japanese television station (TV-Asahi) came up with the idea of collecting donations. And more than 1 million euros were collected.
The money was then used to plant almost 10,000 Japanese cherry trees between 1990 and 2010 on the former border strip and at other selected places that were particularly affected by German division. According to Japanese tradition, the cherry blossoms are supposed to bring peace and tranquillity to the hearts of the people.
The first tree was planted at Glienicke Bridge, the last at the East Side Gallery.
But the longest Japanese cherry tree avenue can be found on the former border strip between Berlin-Lichterfelde and the town of Teltow.
There are about 1,100 cherry trees here. For a few weeks each year, the approximately 1.5 km long former border strip is transformed into a sea of pink, making a walk here a very special experience.
The cherry blossom is celebrated annually at the end of April with one big festival, the Hamami Cherry Blossom Festival. However, the festival had to be cancelled in 2020 and again this year.
Of course, picnics and walks are allowed. Many Japanese families also come here.

This year it is unusually cool, so we have to wait a little longer for the full flowering splendour. But I wanted to give a first impression.
