What Happens When Everything Gets Expensive?

A hundred years ago, food was a family’s biggest expense. Mechanized farming and global trade made it cheaper, and for decades households spent less than ten percent of their income on food.
But that cushion is fading. Grocery bills are rising again, while housing, healthcare, and education have been climbing for years. If wages don’t keep up, something will slip out of reach — but no one knows what will give first.
