When Earth Almost Completely Froze Over

There was a time in Earth’s history when our planet almost completely froze.

Around 700 million years ago, scientists believe Earth entered an extreme climate phase known as Snowball Earth. During this period, ice sheets likely covered nearly the entire surface of the planet — even reaching regions near the equator.

Global temperatures dropped dramatically, pushing life on Earth to the brink of extinction.
Earth only escaped this frozen state after prolonged volcanic activity released massive amounts of greenhouse gases, slowly warming the planet again.

This is not a theory from science fiction.
Snowball Earth is supported by geological evidence found across multiple continents.

Welcome to OddSpark, where rare facts reveal how extreme our planet’s past truly was.
